Fernando VI ordered the creation of this royal garden. The continued expansion of the garden led to Carlos III giving instructions in 1774 to move it to its present location in the Paseo del Prado in Madrid, within the management programme including the Salón del Prado and Atocha. There are 4 terrace walls where plants are open to the public, The Terrace of the “cuadros” contains the collections of ornamental, medicinal, aromatic and garden plants; Terrace of the Botanical Schools, taxonomic collection of plants is on show; FlowerTerrace , in this area there are a variety of trees and shrubs. High Terrace or Laureles, intended to house special collections, such as bonsai. The herbarium, where there is a collection of dried and stored plants, currently it has approximately one million specimens from around the world.
