The Landscape of Light

Madrid has come to be recognised in 2021 as part of the World Heritage list thanks to the wonderful and marvelous Landscape of Light. It was submitted to UNESCO as the Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro, Landscape of Arts and Sciences.

This list of which Madrid is now part of, comprises places with an exceptional Universal Value. This nomination was presented as a Cultural Landscape, since it was and is the first tree-line promenade inside a European capital city. It was created in the XVI century and it also established an Urbanistic Intervention Model that unifies nature and science as engine of a Social transformation.

“The green patch in the heart of Madrid is home to Parque del Retiro, the Real Jardín Botánico and the Paseo del Prado itself. This ensemble is the core value of this Landscape of Light, a unique cluster of Museums and other Science and Art-related spaces, transforming it into a powerful focal point of light and knowledge.”

What places can we find in the Landscape of Light?

Inside the wonderful Landscape of Light we can find the placement of a huge variety of monuments, buildings and singular trees. In the following map, there are two types of placements marked. Marked with numbers are the monuments and buildings, and marked with letters, the singular trees.
